Pride Fest details for SQUID. Come out and Celebrate! (Posted Jun 18, 2010)
Hi Swimmers, PrideFest is here and we have been working hard to make it a fun event for the team. We have a giant floating SQUID, Fish costumes, SQUID Balloons, Sailor outfits and great music to march too. Parade - meet in Cheesman Park at 8:30am, Sunday, to help blow up balloons and learn the marching routine. The parade starts at 9:30am and should be over around 11am. Our location in the parade is Green 8. This will likely put us around the Pavilion for the start but you can ask any parade marshal for directions to Green 8 or text John when you get to the park to find out exactly where we are at 303-297-3994. Keith has built a rolling platform to put all your stuff on while we march. Marchers are encouraged to wear swim suits, as we are a swim team, but this is not required. It's really a lot of fun and the energy from the crowd when they see the swimmers is really exhilarating so come out and March with us! Our booth in Civic Center is C-05, which will be five booths up Colfax from Bannock street. Please feel free to come by the SQUID booth anytime during the weekend to help and hang out. We will have water and Gatorade for the team and it's really fun to talk to people about the team. Happy Pride!

Pride Fest details with SQUID (Posted Jun 15, 2010)

The music will be great and Andrew is working on an easy marching routine for us all, which we will practice Saturday after practice and Sunday before the parade. For the Parade meet in Cheesman Park at 8:30am, Sunday, to help blow up balloons and learn the marching routine. The parade starts at 9:30am and should be over around 11am. Our location in the parade is Green 8. Marchers are encouraged to wear swim suits, as we are a swim team, but this is not required. It's really a lot of fun and the energy from the crowd when they see the swimmers is really exhilarating so come out and March with us! We do have a few shifts still open for the booth and could use a few more volunteers. Our booth number is C-05, which will be five booths up Colfax from Bannock street. The shifts we still need help with are: Sunday 8:30am to 10:00am and 10am to Noon. These shifts should be taken by someone who does not want to march in the parade. On Saturday we could use help in the Morning during Swim Practice and in the late afternoon. If you can help with any of these shifts, please email John at haydenpryor@msn.com Please feel free to come by the SQUID booth anytime during the weekend to help and hang out. We will have water and gatorade for the team and it's really fun to talk to people about the team. Happy Pride and we will see you at the pool. Hopefully the worst of the thunderstorms are behind us. We had an amazing practice tonight and a beautiful sunset. John and Andrew.

Next Weekend is PrideFest, We will need people to work the booth and everyone is welcome to march in the parade. Participants are encouraged but not required to wear swim suits. Outdoor Practice bad weather plan (Posted Jun 8, 2010)

Hi Swimmers,

In the event that evening thunderstorms force the closure of La Alma Pool on Tuesday evenings, we will go to Rude for practice and on Thursdays we will go to Hiawatha for Practice. Morning Thunderstorms are unlikely so Saturdays are a safe bed for outdoor practices but again the back up plan will be to go to Hiawatha for practice if the outdoor pool closes on Saturday due to weather.

We often don't know till late if the pool is going to be closed due to weather but if we do we will send out an announcement as soon as we know so watch your email if the weather is bad.

All is looking good for this evening so we'll see you at La Alma:-)

John

Garage Sale and Fly Clinic (Posted May 14, 2010)

Hi Swimmers,

Tomorrow, Sat May 15th is the garage sale for SQUID. Please drop off anything you want to donate to the team for the sale at Glen Pflum's house, 2801 Birch. Here are all the details once again:

People can drop off their items Friday night after work, 5/14, or Saturday morning, 5/15, starting at 7:00 am. I live at 2801 Birch St in Denver which is 4 blocks Ea of Colo. Blvd and 3 blocks So of MLK Blvd. I’m close to HDRC, actually. People can drop stuff off on their way to practice Saturday at 10 am if that works best. It’s nice to have new stuff around 9:30 or 10 am, anyway, or even as late as Noon. It really helps to mark the price on items before you drop them off. You can use those little colored, peel-off round stickers that you can get at Office Depot, the grocery store, or office.

SQUID is a nonprofit organization so your contributions are tax deductible. There are formulas to figure that out if you use tax software or whatever. If you want to do that, you should list what you are bringing. I won’t even try to inventory everyone’s contributions. What you could get for something at a garage sale might be very different than how the gov’t figures. It may be worth it.

Volunteers. I could use 3 to 5 people to help set up from 7 to 9 or 10, then 2 or 3 during practice, 10 am to 1 pm. I have a friend who will be helping during that period. From 1 to 4 I could use 3 to 5 people again. Also, people may just want to swing by between 3 and 4 to see if their stuff sold, or you can to take it back. Anything that is left will be sent to ARC or other-wise recycled, or put in the alley. I’ll try to bring sign-up sheets to practices, call at me 303-322-7997 or email pflumgd@tde.com.

Our next swim clinic will be Fly. Saturday May 22nd at Hiawatha during our regular practice time. Please email Roger and let him know you plan to attend. barracuda1swim@yahoo.com

John and Roger are two of the best flyers in the State so don't miss this training!

Congratulations Swimmers on a great Summer (Posted Aug 17, 2009)

Hey Swimmers,

As we finish up the Summer swim season and head back in doors (don't forget Hiawatha Davis for Practices on Thurs 7pm and Sat 10:30am) Co-captians Andrew and John wanted to congratulate a number of our swimmers who set ambitious goals this summer and achieved them:

Coach Jon Christianson won the 2.4 mile open water swim at Horsetooth in Ft. Collins.  This event attracts some of the best open water swimmers in the country so congratulate Jon when you see him next.

Dustin, Andy, Patrick and John competed in the Boulder long course half Iron Man Triathlon.  Andy and John did the entire series, Sprint, Olympic and Long course.  Dustin was one of the first swimmers out of the water, and Patrick went crazy and made his first triathlon one of the most competitive in the Country.

Stephan, Jamie, Patrick and Dustin did 1 and 2 mile open water swims at Boulder Res  Dustin took 3rd in this event.

Stephan, John and Keith biked 180 miles from Denver to Aspen in a one day race.  Ouch! Keith followed that up the a 5th place finish in the Colorado AIDS run last weekend.

Daphne DuBach completed in the Triple By-Pass, A 120 mile bike ride from Evergreen to Avon over 3 high mountain passes.

Cari Levy competed in an annual triathlon and beat her previous years time

Glenn Pflum won a bronze metal in the 200 meter back stroke and Kevin Brower won a Silver metal in the Sprint Triathlon at the Out Games in Copenhagen Denmark. Congratulations to John, Keith, Tom Baugh, Bill Mead, and ??? for representing SQUID so very well.

David Smith competed in the 200 Fly for the first time and then dropped around 20 seconds off that time the second time he competed in that event this Summer.

We are sure there are many other accomplishments that we do not know about.  Congratulations to anyone we missed.  This has been a great summer for the team and we are proud of how we all supported each other in reaching our individual goals.

See ya at the pool,

GO SQUID!

Hosted housing for Oct meet (Posted Aug 10, 2009)
As y’all may be aware, the swim meet SQUID is putting on is coming up soon. Since we’ll hopefully have lots of folks coming in from out of town, we’re setting up hosted housing to help defray travel costs. If y’all would be so kind/generous/magnanimous as to open your doors to a guest, we’d really appreciate it! If you are interested in doing so, please contact Ryan Davidson at rtdavidson@gmail.com with the following information: Name. Email address. Physical address (since staying closer to Auraria would make life easier for everyone) Number of people you can host. Gender preference (if any) Any restrictions that might be an issue – smoking (or prohibition thereof), pets, evil gnomes, etc. Thanks!

Team Poll (Posted Aug 8, 2009)

Hi Swimmers,

We need your opinion on two items for team council to make decissions.

1, We are trying to decide between Buena Vista / Mt. Princeton Hot Springs or Winter Park / Hot Sulfer Springs for a trip to the mountains for the team August 28th and 29th.  If you think you might be able to go, please reply to John with your preference or if either is fine let me know that as well.

2, We need to decide whether to do our swim meet in October as a 25 yard or 25 meter event.  Yards are used in most of the COMSA events we compete in so the times in Yards may be more useful.  Meters would make breaking records easier and it is Short Course Meters season according to COMSA.  Some swimmers don't want times in meters that they have to convert to yeards while others want to swim meters to make availble some soft state SCM records.  If you have a preference please email me back.

My email address is haydenpryor@msn.com

We will need all replies by Tuesday at midnight.

Also, hope you can make the pot luck for our Copenhagen Champions Sunday night at 2418 Champa. 6:30pm

Thanks!

John

QUAC Ski N' Swim pictures needed! (Posted Feb 16, 2009)
Greetings Squidlings! This weekend in Salt Lake was a blast, and most of us have pictures (and the sore thighs) to prove it! I was wondering if everyone who took pictures in Salt Lake this weekend could do me a huge favor and bring me a copy of all the pictures you took this weekend on a CD or DVD in Full Resolution, so that we may add them to the SQUID gallery. Also, if you would like a copy of everyone's pictures from this weekend, I would be happy to furnish a CD of all the pictures I get. If you would like one, please either bring me a blank CD-R with your name written on it, or bring me $0.50 and I will burn one from my own spindle of CD-R's. Please bring me your photos sometime this week so that I might get the photos out to everyone as soon as possible. If I can get them all by Saturday at the latest, then I should be able to get everyone a photo CD by next Tuesday. Thanks again, and Rawk On SQUIDs! Cheers! Dustin

Upcoming SQUID Events and practice location question (Posted Feb 12, 2009)

Hi Swimmers, Don't miss these upcoming SQUID events.

Good Luck to our 12 swimmers going to Salt Lake this weekend. May those who are single find love in the temple:-)

Saturday Feb 14th, practice will occur on schedule for those not going to Utah, Patt will no doubt have a Valentines practice planned.

Monday Feb 16th, no morning practice. Instead wish Obama a happy Birthday.

Saturday Feb 21st, Breast Stroke clinic. Regular practice will still occur for those who don't want to do the clinic. Following practice we'll have a team council meeting. Come and help keep the team fun!

Sunday Feb 22nd, meet at 2419 Champa at 9:30am for the Snow Shoe adventure at Henderson mine. It's pretty, it's fun and there is lunch at the end.

Saturday Feb 28th, Backstroke clinic and of course regular practice for those who don't want to partake in the clinic.

Remember, March 9th is the deadline for registering for State meet. We will have almost 40 swimmers going. It will be the biggest, best team we've ever taken to State. See Andrew for more details. swimmin4fun@msn.com

Finally, Give us your thought on pool space and water temp. We have been offered Tues and Wed nights 6:30 to 7:45 at Rude Rec center (13th and Federal) where the water temp is 84 degrees. If we moved, Thurs and Sat and the morning practices would still be at Hiawatha. How would this effect you? Do you think it's a good idea or a bad idea? We'll only move Tuesdays if the team thinks it's best, so for now we are staying at Hiawatha. Email your thoughts to John at haydenpryor@msn.com or talk to John, Jon or Andrew at the pool

Have a great week!

John and Andrew

Hello Squidlings! I would like to resurrect the SQUID team newsletter starting at the beginning of 2009. I am looking for articles, recipes, anecdotes, or anything else you'd like to see in Squid Ink. The deadline for all articles will be the 27th of December. Please email all materials to dcarpenter@mez9.net, including all image attachments. Please make sure each picture is under 1MB in size, and no more than 8 images are sent at a time. 2009 Coaching for SQUID (Posted Nov 28, 2008)

In 2009 we will have a great staff of coaches with Andrew LeVasseur and Jon Christianson as head coaches and Pat Continuing to help with stroke clinics.  Keith and Dustin will be available to sub when Jon and Andrew need a break.  Join me in welcoming Jon and Dustin to the coaching team.  Jon will start Tuesday December 16th as our regular Tuesday night coach.

Next Thursday the coaches will meet to make plans for 2009.  In advance of that meeting I'd like to get input from team members with ideas of what they would like to see in the coming year at practices and meets.  If you have ideas of how the coaches can help make SQUID faster, funner, or friendlier, please email me back and I will compile the results to share with the coaches.

Thanks - John

Team Council has accepted the resignation of our Team Treasurer, David Gauthier. Former Team Capt'n Glenn Pflum has volunteered to be Treasurer for the remainder of the year.

Glenn will be stepping into very big shoes as he prepares to take over the responsibility of Team Treasurer. Team Council requests that all Team members be patient and understanding as we make this transition.

Tom Baugh's Son Ian (Posted Nov 21, 2007)

Squidlings,

It is with great sorrow that we are informing you all that Ian Baugh, Tom's son passed away yesterday after a long and couragious battle with cancer.

We cannot imagine the sense of loss Tom must be feeling after watching his only son grow from an infant into a promising young man, ready for all of the adventure we all take for granted. In just his mid twenties, Ian Baugh is gone, but for Tom, Ian will allways be with him and a part of the Tom we all know and love.

The Team has sent a bouquet of flowers to Tom's home and Glenn Pflum will be bringing a sympathy card to Practice this Saturday for all to sign.

Please keep Tom in your hearts and minds through this difficult time.

A Memorial Service has been scheduled for Saturday December First at 11 am, at St Barnabas Episcopal Church, 1280 Vine Street.

Sincerely,

SQUID Swim Team

SQUID Day at WaterWorld (Posted Sep 3, 2007)

Squidlings,

Those who went to WaterWorld water fun splash park last Sunday had a fabulous time!  We arrived as the park opened as to get in as many rides in before the crowds showed up!  We rode at least 6 rides before lunch without waiting (much).  There was the "toilet bowl",the raft slide down and up and down and up and so on, there was the 8 tube slide with race times displayed, the 3 slide drop, the river and pool ride among many others!

Thanks go out to Keith and John for arranging the tickets (including lunch) and to our own "Den Mother" David for watching our gear and providing a "home base".

Do you want to see yourself swim? (Posted Aug 9, 2007)

Team,

We are trying to find out how many people will be interested in underwater clinic/session? The session will be in late summer or early fall.

This may involve filming you swimming during the practice hours, then get together to critique and discuss the strokes when we get everybody's video.

The team has an underwater camera, which we tested and seems to deliver decent quality movies, just video - no audio.

More detail will be discussed at the team council meeting this Saturday morning before practice. Such as, how do we want to do it, costs, etc...

Please let me know... yes, or no... plus comment and thoughts. The sooner, the better. The more, the merrier.

Thanks,

Patt and Wayne

Interview with new coach Jess! (Posted Jan 28, 2007)

LEARN MORE ABOUT SQUID'S NEW COACH, JESSICA LAWSON

I recently talked with SQUID's new swim coach Jessica Lawson.  Jess moved to Denver only 3 months ago from Ohio where she'd spent most of her life.  She is working full-time at TCF Bank in Lakewood.

Jess has been swimming since age 6. She competed in age-group swimming and in high school in Richfield, Ohio.  She also swam competitively at Baldwin-Wallace College in Berea, Ohio.

What were your favorite/best competitive events?

I am a sprinter.  Definitely the 50 Free and 100 Free.

What sort of coaching have you done before?

I coached both age group swim teams, and a masters swim team that focused mostly on development and improving swim technique.

How is it different coaching a Masters team?

You can just tell age-group swimmers what to do and they try to do it.  Masters swimmers need and expect explanations about why they're d

I do apologize for sending out the former message. Your safety should be high priority at this time.

I will update you all about Saturday's practice.

Thanks,
